[RESOLVED] Sony TV KD49XG9005BU - cannot record on HDD!

Hello,

I just bought this KD49XG9005BU and trying to format and record on an external HDD attached to the USB port for recording. It doesn't work.

I plug in the disk - I tries a 1TB and 500GB disk. The first time I format it, it says it's ready. Then I try to register it and it stubbornly keeps saying it can't. I'll attach the images of the error. How to fix this?

I have a very old Sharp TV with recording, it's a breeze to setup, not a singe problem with the same disks.

I spend over 2 hours getting this to work.

Are you trying to do this from the YouView interface?

If so, its not supported; you have to exit YouView, as in the FAQ at the top of this forum, and use just the Freeview side.

On which you need the Hoshsadiq fix to retain the itv Hub and All4.

You are using a port rated for HDD REC? (Blue - USB3 - or labelled HDD REC)?

With a device > 32GB?

Direct connected?

Have you tried the performance check?

And all the other hoops you have to jump through?

Hi @Richlion2 How did you get on? If you are still having problems what is the make and model of HDDs and what are their power requirements. You are probably already aware that it must be a HDD and not SSD.

No luck, it's a pretty standard Seagate 500GB disk SATA III (HDD, not SSD), plugged into an external USB drive docking station, something like this:

The last thing that comes to my mind is that's it's an older model and USB is 2.0, not 3.0. I don't have a 3.0 docking station at the moment to use with this TV. The one I've got was plugged into an older Sharp TV probably 8 years old and an HD-READY, with a USB 2.0 port and it worked perfectly. I assume 3.0 USB would be needed for recording HD/4k stuff?

I only hope that many people are using this on this model of TV and it works.

My TV is set to Autoupdate connected to my internet and I ran the OS update and it said my system is up to date. So I don't think it requires any firmware updates. Or does it?

The fact that the tv doesn't tell you that an update is available unfortunately it does not mean nothing, be sure to have the latest FW https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/lcd-tvs-android-xg90xx_x90xxg-series/kd-49xg9005/downloads/00016450

USB 3.0 is not mandatory, speed yes but most of HDDs should meet the requirement.

Another issue could be related to amperage needed (that is normally related to HDD capacity), so be sure not to have a very high capacity HDD that has not its own power supply.

The drive is in a docking station that has it's own power supply. I'll check the amperage though.

yes HDD REC port, Blue.

yes, 500GB and 1TB drives tried. Preformatted as NTFS on a Windows system

yes, HDD in Docking station, USB cable into Port directly, no hub

Yes, at first I format the disk, as I am not sure if the NTFS it has is compatible. WHen that is done I can see the disk is recognized, 500GB shows as 466GB, I can also see the menu where is says Register. When I press it, it then comes up with an error "Can't detect a USB HDD for recording".

That is correct. I tried many times. Let's leave it for now. I've got some options to check. Firmware is one area I need to look at, maybe my TV needs a fix, I hope.

before implementing the new firmware (that you should do in any case) try just rebooting the tv by pressing and hold the poweroff button....

Hi Everyone,

a bit of good news. I had a 2,5" old laptop drive in a USB 3.0 encasement, it doesn't come with an external power, but I managed to format it and it works - hurray 😃

I think the issue with my HDD docking station is it's USB2.0 version and somehow this may be causing an issue. I'll purchase a USB 3.0 one after new year, hopefully this will help me use my almost brand new 1TB HDD.

I will also update the firmware, as it is from beginning of November and there is a newer version.

Thanks to all of your for putting so much effort in helping. If this didn't work it would be a shame for a TV worth nearly £900. The only thing I didn't get working is the satellite tuner, which is a matter for another day. Not that I insist, after all nearly all Feesat channels are already on Freeview.

I'll change this thread to partially resolved.

The satellite on these TVs is not Freesat.
