I doubt it. If you are thinking of doing this via a computer the computer will not recognise the formatting of the Sony

registered HDD..

You can buy a STB recorder or PVR (Personal Video Recorder) from Humax, Manhattan or Panasonic, these will record without loss of quality.

I’ve just bought a Bravia 32WE800 to replace, and use in addition to, an aging Bravia KDL-32WE613.

I assumed that the HDD I used for recording on the old TV would be compatible with the new one. It is to the extent that the 32WE800 recognises the disk and produces a ‘Recordings List’ but, when I try to play anything, I just get a ‘Recording unavailable for viewing. Date set by broadcaster expired’ warning even for stuff recorded less than a week ago.

Any suggestions for a work-around will be very much appreciated. I can't find a topic here relevant to this problem.

Otherwise I like the new TV.

You can only use your HDD with the TV you originally registered it to, it is not interchangeable with other Sony TVs.

If you were to register it with the new TV you would have to reformat it and thus lose the recordings that exist on it.

Thanks for your help daveyk64.

What puzzles me is that the problem seems to be with dates only. The new TV does recognise and evidently read the disk.

As your HDD has been registered with your older TV the programmes have been encrypted and cannot be played on any other Sony TV or any TV.

I have been looking online for an official Sony document to confirm this but have been unsuccessful.

I did find an article that goes through the process of registering and recording to HDD on Sony TVs.

Scrolling half way through the article I found this which explains.

Additionally, all recordings registered to your USB HDD will be encrypted, preventing them from being played on any TV other than the one they were originally recorded on.

Unfortunately the moderators won't let me include a link to the website.

Thanks LightFoot

That's a very nasty possibility for which I would quess there is a fix. But I suppose I could tray copying the whole disk to to another disk in the hope that updates the file dates.

I'm pretty ignorant about TVs. Would it be possible to use a STB to record playback on the old TV? And if so, would there be a serious loss of quality i wonder?

Thanks Daveyh94 - I see what you mean. And of course my last comment should have read ‘no fix’ not ‘a fix’. It looks as though the STB or PVR way is the only way. But what a drama! Will report back.
