according to xperia support, there is an option to choose between mtp and msc. i sent them this screenshot two days ago, no reply, of course.

You can try to enable usb debugging mode in developer options first.

To enable dev options, go to settings-about phone,tap several times on build number.

with usb debugging mode on still has only mtp mode + windows can see xperia as a composit device

i guess a factory reset or "repair" via pc companion perhaps could do something. or could not.

the phone is less than a week old, so i won't do any of these.

i bought a sony device because i've fed up with chinese noname brands' support and their "do a factory reset" solutions

There must be an option as USB connection mode which let you select between msc or mtp. I don't know why its not there. Is your sd card working and is readable by your device?

I will also suggest you to do a system repair with pcc.

it could be even worse

before repair of course i did a backup and now this little pc companion can't restore it... in fact it doesn't do anything, the progress bar hangs at ~75%

Ive got same problem, cant switch between mtp and msc because there is no option to do that in usb connectivity. Tried all solutions i could find out there but nothing helped. I see theres quite a bunch of people with same problem, wouldnt it be the time already for you to fix this, Sony?

Is Android compatible with Windows XP?

My computer running XP does not recognise my Xperia E4g when connected via USB cable. I have connected to other computers running Windows 7 and 8 and there is no problem. I have also tried different USD cables.

Is Android version 4.4.4 compatible with XP (32 bit)?

Thanks for your input Phy. I downloaded PC Companion, but my PC still does not recognise my device (Xperia E4g).

Windows Explorer also does not pick up a device connected to my PC.

I believe I have the correct specs (as specified on the required section of the download page) i.e.

System requirements

Internet broadband connection
Intel® Pentium® 4, 3.6 GHz or equivalent AMD processor
5 GB free hard disk space
2 GB RAM
1 available USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port and USB cable
Microsoft® Windows XP™ SP3 (32-bit), Vista (32/64-bit), Windows 7 (32/64-bit), Windows 8/8.1 (32/64-bit) or Windows 10*

Except I have 1.66 GHz processor - not 3.6GHz - so possibly that is where it is not compatible?

Downloading photos to my Mac

I have connected with USB to a USB hub attached to my Mac Mini. I expected the device to show up in my photo download software (have one for Adobe Bridge and the other is an Apple software called Image Capture) but it is not showing up. Nor in Finder.

What is happening is that the phone is charging! And I can't get past that process it seems. Do I have to have a fully charged phone before it will be recognized by my computer as being a device with photos to download? Or maybe the USB cord needs to be plugged in directly to the computer?

Freely admit to being very ignorant of the phone and Android at present. Thanks for any tips!

Win 8.1 & xperia e4g USB connection problem

Hello,

my computer doesn't allow me to enter the phone - i cannot see the files through the windows explorer, and in consequence cannot copy any files. PC Companion just recognizes that a "Telephone (null)" was plugged in. The problem occurs on different USB cables, but did not occur with the same phone on Windows 7. I have tried these solutions, but they dont work: /t5/FAQ/USB-connection-problems/m-p/348074#U348074

In my phone there is no possibility to chance MTP/MSC settings. I have tried various thing - uninstalling the device through device manager, installing new drivers (windows doesn't find any). In "My Computer" there is an Xperia E4g device, but it cannot be opened. I also tried reinstalling the pc companion. after klicking OK, everyghing goes on fine, the installator tells me that the installation was completed successfully. I tried researching this DISM thing, but I cannot find a real solution to the problem.

Please help me solve this problem.

When will you fix the disappearance of USB Connection Mode setting in Newer Models with New Firmware

When will you fix this bug which is related to the disappearance of USB Connection Mode?

As an android programmer, it's a bit inconvenience when you're unable to debug your apps on physical device especially when it comes to newer model.

The problem is that some of the newer models(maybe most?) are stuck with 'Media Transfer Protocol(MTP)', the default mode of USB Connection Mode which use Single ADB Interface driver that includes only 'Media Transfer Protocol(MTP)' without being able to switch to 'Mass Storage Mode(MSC)' which use the Composite ADB Interface driver which includes all of the protocols INCLUDING Android Debug Bridge(adb) Protocol which is required when you want to debug an android device with the adb.

It would be helpful if you fix it soon.

People won't be able to install the debug drivers as long you don't let people switch to 'Mass Storage Mode' which also switch the hardware id into hardware id that is listed in the drivers inf file

(I'm the OP - just forgot my first account emil+pass)

Briefly: two days ago I brought my E4 to Sony's official service (Cordon, Budapest). I told the problem, they connected the phone their computer via USB. Of course, phone had MTP mode only. They didn't understand what's the issue with the phone. I tried to explain differences between MTP&MSC mode, no success. Best answer I got: "if you want to store data on your phone, send it yourself via email".

After this I wrote to Sony Hungary (customer support) and Speedshop (where I bought the phone), no reply at all. I'd like to know what shall I do with this two months old phone.

Any suggestions? What shall I do? What can I do?

p.s. Just a few words on Cordon, the official service: ~10 years ago my week old SE Z520 had keyboard issues, they didn't repaired it, because "I'm left handed and push the buttons in wrong direction".

I don't think you can do anything. The phone just doesn't have mass storage mode. But you can transfer any file between PC and phone both on internal storage and on SD card. It just doesn't show preview, but only simple thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Only update could solve this.

According to Sony Support, the phone has mass storage mode.

File transfer in MTP mode is slow and especially transfer to the sdcard often fails.
