Indeed, here in Europe the Sony compact models often appeared on a local retailer's top 10 and even top 5 list of all phones sold. Sony has a unique franchise with the high end compact models, and it would be puzzling if they were to drop it. The last compact was too thick (12.1mm) though.

I would like to see a <5 inch compact, with the current small or no-bezel designs the device could be small. My first Xperia was a 2011 Ray with its 3.3 inch screen it was tuly tiny! The modern equivalent would have a ~4-4.5 inch screen! There are lots of people who need from time to time the full functionality of a smartphone but who do not spend hours on it a day and don't want a large screen.

Sony's market share is unfortunately so small that if only 0.5% of people want a top compact, it moves the needle meaningfully for them.

I did have an xz2 compact but the software and hardware execution was soo poor I have gone back to my x compact...

come on sony give us a high end small phone!!!

I laughed too when I found this picture but in an upcoming future we will have phones like this. For now the new Xperia 1 (and for that matter current phones from others brands) is a huge step back from the past when phones were COMFORTABLES to carry on, using them one handed.

Sony understood that with its compact line of phones and it was smart.

Nowadays it just follows others brands by making non logical choices (ridiculously big phones, no more headphones jack, no more compact phones).

At least after a Tablet Z, Tablet Z2, Z3 Compact, a Z5 Compact, 2 XZ1 (dual sim as Sony didn't offer a dual sim compact in 2017. One as a spare due to ridiculous current phones), I know which will be my next phone when I will not need a second sim anymore: an XZ1 Compact. Thank you Sony for helping me choosing

They even seemed to be developing one according to leaks on case producers:

https://www.olixar.com/carbon-fibre-sony-xperia-xz4-compact-case-black

For now I'm very disappointed, but let's hope for the best, maybe they'll change their minds.

I think in regards to size and the fact smaller bezels allow for larger screens, the Xperia 10 is the compact version...

Again, this is where the Sony marketing genious comes up... They could have called them Xperia 10 Compact and Xperia 10 Plus, but no, they had to get rid of the name rhat made their phone famous with people into smaller phones.

The Xperia 10 is basically more compact than the XZ2 Compact. It's slightly taller, a tiny bit wider and lighter, and much thinner.

Sorry but no, the Xperia X10 isn't a compact phone. It's even taller than the XZ1...

So this is a no go for those seeking a COMFORTABLE phone that fits in pockets, can be used easily for everyone one handed.

XZ1: 148 x 73 x 7,4 mm

XZ2 Compact: 135 x 65 x 12,1 mm

X10: 156 x 68 x 8,4 mm

Where this 'who got the biggest' game gonna ends? 200? 250 mm ?

This is getting ridiculous

It's taller, but thinner, it will fit in your pocket just the same.

And you have a one handed mode on all Sony phones, even if you're a child you can reach everything on the screen that way.

It's great if you need a compact phone and don't like notches and holes, the 10 series is bad value for money otherwise.

It's not the width that some people have a problem with, It's the length.

A true Compact will fit in the front pocket of most Jeans or trousers and allow the wearer to sit down without bending the phone or doing themselves an injury. 156mm is too long to allow this, especially if you usually wear Jeans.

Exactly. Even the thickness isn't a problem nor the weight (whereas new generations are somewhat often called "mollusc generation" where they can't hold more than 1 gram and being weary )

When I read reviews saying the X2C compact is too heavy, I'm seriously baffled.

Those who never had handy phones can't understand why most of compact phones's users are upsetted to not found anymore a practical smartphone which doesn't look likes cake slices...)

In 2019, Samsung realises there is a market for a smaller phone with top of the line processor and features, and offer S10e as alternative to S10. Apple realises the same and offers XR as alternative to XS. I know, both are not what a Sony Compact user would consider compact, but these two other companies seem to come to the realisation that, with sizes going the way they are, not everyone wants the biggest, and not everyone who doesn't want the biggest is okay with inferior performance on other scores.

As these two companies dominating the high end market come to this realisation, Sony releases an awesome small smart portable TV with phone and camera features, calls it the Xperia 1, and discontinues the compact alternative they have always offered. To me, THAT is where Sony's marketing genius comes in!

I'd rather have a larger phone but I can see the appeal of small phones. A compact Xperia 1 at IFA priced at around 500 USD could really help Sony mobile division.
