Hi,

I've recently purchased the WH-H900n headphones for work and leisure. They are performing really well for the leisure part however there's a big issue with them at work.

I purchased them mainly to use at work to make calls using our VoIP system (currently using a wired headset) but when I connect the Sony headphones to the laptop, it appears as two separate devices:

Both of the devices appear to have microphone functionality, but the 'Headphones' device cannot be used for calls - I can hear all sounds except the actual call sound. I can switch to 'Headset' device to make calls, but then I have to switch back, as otherwise all other sound (music, videos etc) comes out in phonecall quality.

I don't know what to do and it's driving me crazy. Can you please let me know how I can sort this out, maybe combine the devices somehow into one? Never seen any other BT headphones do this.

Thanks a lot,

David

Hi Dpinkevicius,

What's the operating system of your computer? Do you connect the headphones via Bluetooth?

Cheers,

The_Black_Rose

Hi The_Black_Rose,

I have same problem. I use Windows 10 Pro (ver. 2004) 64 bit. I try connect via 3.5mm jack and bluetooth too. In the wired mode I can use WH-H900N as a regular headphone. I can not use microphone in this mode. In the wireless mode the Windows detected 2 separate device. If I select sound output Headphone then WH-H900N is stereo and I able to turn on Windows Sonic spatial sound, but I can not use microphone. If I select Headset then WH-H900N is mono and I not able to turn on Windows Sonic, but I can use microphone. Of course, the system, bluetooth driver and audio driver up to date.

Exist solution for this problem?

Any luck with finding a solution for this??

As Kormi99 says, if I wire the device, the headset microphone can't be used and if it's connected via Bluetooth, there are two instances

Headphones is only headphones audio, no mic.

Headset is audio + mic, but the sound quality of a voice call, so playing any audio is not a good experience.

If I'd known this would be the case and I would have to constantly swap between the two devices I would've never bought these heaphones.

This issue drives me crazy. When I go to MS Teams call then devices is auto-switched to "Headset" but then everything else that was using "Headphones" goes mute and stuff like Youtube even stops working.

And if I REALLY need other sounds from other applications while I'm using mic then I have to set "Headset" as default device and audio quality becomes insanely bad.

I'm yet to check but I do have a feeling that if I go gaming some MMO while voice-chatting via Discord I will have to get used to the super low-quality sound.

Darn. Who was this brilliant engineer that came up with such a *****ty solution? Is Sony that bad when it comes to making a proper audio device?

Thankfully my country laws allow me to return a device to the store even if simply don't like it. I suppose that's what I'll have to do

Ok. Apparently Sony has nothing to do with the issue and I have to apologize here. After doing some googling and research I have stumbled upon this article which describe the limitation in details: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/44sxms/bluetooth_headset_goes_to_low_audio_quality_when/

Bottom-line is: EVERY bluetooth headset regardless of manufacturer, quality, BT version or codecs can function in only one of two modes at any given moment of time when connected to Windows:

1. High-quality audio with no mic support

2. Low-quality audio with mic support

Means that when you use mic you will be ALWAYS getting *****ty audio regardless of the type of BT headset that you use
