Connecting KDL-40EX713 and STR-DH810 with optical cable - sound drops out

Hi,

I have a KDL-40EX713 TV and an STR-DH810 receiver - and they are connected with an optical cable so that as long as the receiver is on "TV" input it plays the sound of whatever is on the TV.

The problem is that the sound "drops out" with different, but normally short intervals, like once a minute or so. It seems like the connection is interrupted and then re-initialized as the display on the receiver briefly shows "LPCM [48]" every time the sound drops out. Same as it does when the receiver is first turned on or when the input is changed.

The strange thing is that the problem goes away when I watch HD TV channels where the receiver briefly displays "Dolby Digital". It is like the TV does not give the receiver a stable, continous PCM signal.

I have tried all PCM-related settings in both units - to no avail.

Have anybody ever experienced something like this? And more importantly: Can it be fixed?

Hm.

There is an ongoing issue with sound dropouts when watching BBC HD (you'll see the thead in this forum).

Oddly enough about 2 days ago, my av amp starting displaying pcm connection when taking sound from my Sony NX503 but before this it has shown DD (when this was being used).

The same channels viewed via my PVR (humax) show sound as DD.

BBC HD preview segments show DD 5.1!

Seems like something subtle has changed; some firmware update to the Sony? None has been recently advised though.

So, I seem to be the cause of my own problems. The sound drop-outs disappeared when I changed the optical cable. The cable must have been only just able to make a proper connection in one of the ports in the receiver. The LPCM/Dolby Digital difference still does not really make sense to me.

But now I have everything working...
