2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

Unfair contract terms act 1977

This legislation restricts a trader's ability to use contract terms to limit their legal and contractual liabilities. Traders cannot limit or exclude liability for death or personal injury arising from their negligence.

In consumer contracts, traders cannot limit or exclude liability for breaches of the implied terms as to description, quality and fitness for purpose of goods. In addition, any attempt to mislead the consumer about his rights is an offence under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. (These Regulations cover traders' duties towards consumers in general - see 'Consumer protection from unfair trading'.)

Hmm, the Forum is still a bit broken - it would not let me Cancel a Reply.

I don't know if this is common knowledge or what but I have some news regarding the USB HDD recording facility on Bravia tv's.  Just last week I read on the forum that SONY were promising that this function would be enabled by 24th December this year.  Only 2 weeks ago I purchased a brand new Bravia 49" X80 C on the strength of this facility being made available.  I had looked at other brands but this recording facility genuinely swung it for me.  I made my own enquiries about when this would be enabled (USB HDD recording direct from the tv).  I received the reply that it should be available by 31st March!!!!  So, that's 4 months away near enough.  I am quite frankly outraged at this news and I have stated this in my reply to SONY.  I feel let down and I also feel that I have been greatly misled by SONY over this function that is not there!

Does anybody know if we, the consumers can do anything about this?  Can we bring pressure on SONY to at least compensate us in some way for misleading us with false advertising about the functionality of their product?  Surely it is fraud?

Man feel our pain Sent from my Samsung device

Would it be possible to have a new topic just for returning the TV's? What people did/said/emailed, date bought, date returned, grounds for return, which retailers took them back and the SOGs act etc?

This thread gets so many posts daily that unless someone speculatively goes back quite a few (10s? of) pages, they might not come across anything relevent and so be unaware how it was done.

@NickCo1979 Can you edit the first post adding and removing issues based on the last fixes?

Remote Lag
Yesterday update improved remote control lag but didn't fix it completely.
I was in fact testing the TV and switching sat channels it happen once that for at least 40 seconds I couldn't control my tv at all. [Apparently if you use side view app it kind of unlock it... I need to test it more]

Channel list

  1. Transfer [export] channel list is enabled if you connect usb drive [earlier I needed each time to restart the TV]
  2. I can export now both digital and sat, without the need to first amend the lists in the TV [Earlier was exporting only digital]
  3. I updated both sat and digital tv channels
  4. I exported the data using the USB
  5. I edited the lists on my PC [took me an hour, tanks Sony]
  6. Imported the file but only digital channels list was imported
  7. This morning I checke and the list of channels was messed up again like it was doing earlier

I have to keep testing the other issues

The only thing Sony will understand is pressure from the retailers as the TVs are being returned. Why put up with something you are not happy with? Take it back and get something else, or wait until January and see what the 2016 line up brings. Sony are treating you guys like mugs. My new Panasonic should be here in a few days. Can't wait to see how it compares with the Sony I returned.

I agree.
For me also basic features like page up and down should be consider a basic funcionality every tv should have (and actually have).

The fact that many features are advertised and not working can allow you to return the TV.

I'm actually considering it, but I bought it online around 2 weeks ago, I have to check what I have to do and how I can do it.
