Lossless WMA playback doesn't work on STR-DN1080

Hello, I've just got my new STR-DN1080 receiver and am mostly very happy with it. However it does have one very annoying fault. Unless I'm doing something wrong the receiver refuses to play lossless WMA files over the netwerk using DLNA. It says the files are corrupted or not supported. Reading the manual it would appear that lossless WMA playback isn't supported.

I am simply amazed at this lack of functionality. Sadly, as you may imagine, my entire music library has been ripped into my PC as lossless WMA. I have a few hi-res files in FLAC and these work fine. What's even more frustrating is that the old STR-DA3600 that this has replaced can play them, and my Sony TV can play them, but not this "High Resolution Audio" receiver.

If I'm doing anything stupid can someone please tell me, otherwise I'm off into the loft to retrieve 500 CDs to re-rip in FLAC !!

Hi @MiteBe and welcome to the Community

Unless another member can vouch differently, I'm afraid if the manual states it doesn't support

lossless WMA playback then it genuinely won't support it.

At least you're not doing anything wrong

I don't envy your re-ripping mission 😮

Hi Jumpsuit, thanks for replying, happy to be here !!

Well, technically if I'm being pedantic it says in the notes section...

  • The receiver does not play coded files such as DRM and Lossless.

...which is not quite right. It happily plays 24bit 96KHz FLAC files, and the last time I looked FLAC was lossless.

But it also says...

The receiver may not play this file format on the home network server.

...when referring to WMA9. "May" ?? What kind of statment is that ?

So, I have a few theories and it'd be nice if Sony (or someone in the know) could enlighten me 🙂

1. The software isn't finished (hence the ambiguity/lack of consistency in the documentation)

2. Microsoft have started to charge for lossless WMA and Sony don't want to pay

3. A complete oversight (I really hope it isn't this)

4. A policy decision and deliberate ommision (and if it's this I'd like to know on what basis)

Hello, can someone from SONY please answer ? It should be fairly straightforward to answer the question, surely?
