Projector problem

Recently bought an Xperia 5 to use in my camper van with a projector. I have tried to hook it up by projector has no signal. Utterly gutted. Any advice? Please note I am reasonably technical but not a whizz. TIA.

What projector?, how did you try to connect?. what were you trying to watch?

Can't help without information.

Hi, apologies. It's an elphas projector (bran new) ive cabled up from my phone via c cable to elphas using the USB port. I am waiting for another connector from Amazon that will enable me hopefully to use the HDMI port. My main query is: is this phone capable of using a projector?

Oh, I was trying to watch you tube. Do I need an App? Is the software currently on the phone compatible with doing this?

I'm struggling to get it to work over HDMI - I've got a new 4k capable HDMI cable, and a USB C to HDMI that does display port 4K 60fps but no joy. Most confused.

Valid for

  • Xperia® 5 II
  • Xperia 1
  • Xperia 1 II
  • Xperia 5

Solution

You can connect your Xperia 1, Xperia 5, Xperia 1 II, or Xperia 5 II to an external display or TV which has a DisplayPort™ or HDMI port.

  • To connect the phone to an external display or TV that has a DisplayPort, you can use a USB Type-C™ cable which supports DisplayPort 4K 60 fps (frames per second).
  • To connect the phone to an external display or TV that has an HDMI port, you can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter cable which supports DisplayPort 4K 60 fps.

Note: For more details about compatibility, refer to the cable adapter retailer or supplier.

There's an interesting article here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/xperia-5-type-c-hdmi-out-working.4101205/) where some people have issues and others are ok.

The spec:

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/smartphones/xperia-5m2/specifications

Says:

"OTHER FEATURES: Smart connectivity, Google Cast, NFC, Output video/image via Display Port support Type-C Cable or USB-C to HDMI Adapter Cable (Display Port 4K 60fps)"

I thought it would litterally just mirror the display via the HDMI. When playing youtube the sound is off and if I unplug the HDMI cable it stops youtube but nothing shows on screen

Hi there, cable compatibility would vary and that can be confirmed from its maker, you can check before buying if it's compatible and beware of the sales lies.

I bought this one as the two I tried before didn't work:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004BEMD5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_fabc_dlC_1N91FbE33RCT8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=...

Should it just display on the second screen or is there a setting to change?

Everything else seems fine, keyboard, mouse, usb stick, even network cable, the hdmi though isn't playing.

Were the two before that one, the same brand or the same data transfer rate? if so, this could explain why none of which is compatible, Can you head out to store and run trials with multiple cables and connect to different devices, like check if it'd work with a TV instead of a projector, point is to try different things until you can determine which part exactly is problematic.

That's the kind of path I've been going down, different brands, different cables, different monitors and different tv's - I've still not got it to work.

My HTC Desire from long ago worked with HDMI perfectly, via an MHL adapter, plugged it an and away it went. I'm confused why it seems so tricky now, 8 -10 years on you'd expect it to be simpler

Yes, that's a bummer but true for most scenarios, devices are having more features and the variety increases, making it more complex to have it all work together.

Have you tried a Sony HDMI cable and still no luck?
