2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

I am in two minds what to do, I think I am going to have problems returning it to Currys, however the quality of the  screen is great but I can put up with a lot of the things and hope it improves, probably not then in which case I will decide what to do but the situation is deplorable and totally unacceptable.

I am going to steer clear of this latest "Update" for fear of it ruining my Xmas viewing.

Welcome back everyone !

Now I can report as I find since the UK update to PKG2.645.0052EUA

After the update, all seemed to function OK and the remote seemed much more responsive .. now usable. YouView Functions OK. Great I thought.. disapointed about the delay to HHD REC and PAP.

My last converstion with my suppliers customer service team, is that I would wait for the 24th Dec then discuss satisfaction with the TV when all the advertised features were available. Obviously the next conversation is going to be tricky. Went to bed happy that I had at least got a stable TV minus a couple of features.

BUT ,,,, this morning before I posted this I thought I'd just check, I switched on the TV to a blank screen and after about a minute it rebooted to the Sony logo, rotating dots and Android logo. NOT good. Has anyone else had this?

I really don't want to do a factory reset because of all the customisations done and apps installed, but I might have to.. I guess today's task is to write down all the settings for each input, list the apps and all the app settings and plug ins installed... what a pain.

Product is is Sony 2015 KDL 43W805C Android TV, UK Model with YouView, purchased Sept 2015.

@adyjay33 I'm in exactly your position, but even if I bought this TV recently, I have to keep in mind that people bought this TV since June, and probably they never returned hoping that Sony was going to keep his word and fix stuff, but honestly after all of those months, with no information provided, no list of known issues, no roadmaps...
I personally don't trust Sony animore, I'm glad I didn't buy jet the camera I wonted, I'm really considering to add Sony to ma NO BRAND list.
So because I'm still in time I don't want to keep something that is probably going to be left as it is.
In 2016 they will release the new TVs series, then good luck!
I want a workind device I don't want to get frustrated in front of a TV, I payed a lot of money as all of us and this is not what I was expecting.

I tried to import a channel list last night Manuel...  Import failed!  - It worked before the update!

i) I STILL have the issue with satellite channels deleting themselves from the 'favourites' list.

ii) STILL have the problem of deleted channels re-appearing on the satellite tuning list.

iv) STILL no Diseqc control; even though it's there on the menu.

v) STILL have severe latency between HDMI inputs and optical out when outputting anything other than PCM - which renders the set unsuitable for use with a home cinema system.

- And I remain completely unconvinced this set will be capable of receiving future UHD transmissions as it cannot decode the Fransat UHD test transmission - mainly because there is no facility to adjust the receiver's parameters to do so.

The tuning UI for satellite channels is unusable in any case...  The external editing 'application' - which one might find only by having the good luck to be directed to it ( Sony don't tell you!)  is VERY limited...  No facility to rename channels for instance ( as might be necessary).

No facility either to customise the 'home screen' so that items in which the viewer is uninterested don't have to be 'waded through' to do something as basic as change inputs...   Similarly; the set cannot be customised so that meddling  fingers aren't tempted to interfere witht hings the owner might want left well alone....

Then of course there are the random re-boots/lock ups.

There is some very SERIOUS and FUNDAMENTAL lack of competence with the so-called 'Engineers' who are tinkering with the 'advanced facilities' of these sets when they have not yet produced a platform that reliably does the very basic things a TV set of this calibre is supposed to be able to do!

"I personally don't trust Sony animore, I'm glad I didn't buy jet the camera I wonted, I'm really considering to add Sony to ma NO BRAND list."

This is the second item from Sony that has let me down... Some years ago I had a Blu-Ray player off them which 'bricked' itself after only two years...  And in any case wouldn't play about 1/4 of the discs presented to it. The 'cheap' LG (half the price) which replaced it in a hurry has been utterly reliable...   In the latter half of 2016 I'll be upgrading my filming kit to 4K - probably spending around £30K on cameras an monitors.

- After this little 'experience'?

We would appear to have paid through the nose for something that's no better than no-brand supermarket junk! And - very obvously - Sony's design and engineering people really don't understand the very basics of their job.

You can be VERY sure that Sony is well-off my list of possible suppliers...  If they can no longer build a household telly properly what hope is there for their more sophisticated kit?

Indeed it is a difficult decsion to make... 😞

The fact I bought 4 3D glasess makescthe decision even harder...£200 for them and I get a stupid pop up appearing all the time which kind of ruins the movie.

To be honest I feel like driving to Sony HQ and standing outside with the TV and shouting out loud how crap it is...

I bet they will do something then... I think a letter to Watchdog etc... is now really due.

Guys keep the issues consise detailing the problem you have lets keep this foum relevant to issues at hand.

The lastest update unfrotunately was a small update and were to fix the below issues, so yes, we do still have other issues but we need to be clear so they can be added to the list as a fault.

  • Responsiveness of the IR remote control
  • Occasional black screen while powering on the TV
  • Occasional black screen with sound when switching off the TV
  • TV rebooting during channel changing

Hi Guys,

Though I've not been on here for a while I've been following progress....or not! as the case maybe, via e-mail notifications.

I purchased my KD-55X9305C 29th Aug took delivery begining Sept since then I've only done one update the one we were all waiting for..... and held back on the youview update and following one I think....2 since then ?

I'd been sceptical of updating any further as to cause more problems than solving and judging by some of your reponses with lost features and black screens etc I think I may have been right !

I watch generally through sky so youview isnt a major concern for me, as to the lack of tv guide via satelite dish ! Lip sync is more an issue waching via Kodi and lack of  5.1 now not showing on films. But pi***s me off none the less!

Can someone comfirm what I might expect should I update it.... not sure what to expect ! pi***s me off that even the basic funtions they still havent got right.

@Caledonian_TV I try to compare your experience with mine:

I tried to import a channel list last night Manuel...  Import failed!  - It worked before the update!

> (If you can explain the error) Worked for me partially, after importing the Digital channel list was updated but not the sat one

i) I STILL have the issue with satellite channels deleting themselves from the 'favourites' list.

> I never tried the favourites I will do it this weekend and let you know

ii) STILL have the problem of deleted channels re-appearing on the satellite tuning list.

> Same frustrating behaviour in my side

iv) STILL no Diseqc control; even though it's there on the menu.
> I don't know how this works and what is supposed to do, I'm new with sat TV, if you like send me a private msg so I can try to test in my TV

v) STILL have severe latency between HDMI inputs and optical out when outputting anything other than PCM - which renders the set unsuitable for use with a home cinema system.

> Not using HDML, the optical connection to my sound bar never had problems, and in the past I used my laptop to play some video content and I didn't notice any issue, send me a private msg with some detail so I can try to reproduce the issue

- And I remain completely unconvinced this set will be capable of receiving future UHD transmissions as it cannot decode the Fransat UHD test transmission - mainly because there is no facility to adjust the receiver's parameters to do so.

 > I tried yesterday withe the two astra UHD channels, they worked for me and the quality was actually impressive

The tuning UI for satellite channels is unusable in any case...  The external editing 'application' - which one might find only by having the good luck to be directed to it ( Sony don't tell you!)  is VERY limited...  No facility to rename channels for instance ( as might be necessary).

 > Agree

No facility either to customise the 'home screen' so that items in which the viewer is uninterested don't have to be 'waded through' to do something as basic as change inputs...   Similarly; the set cannot be customised so that meddling  fingers aren't tempted to interfere witht hings the owner might want left well alone....

 > Agree

Then of course there are the random re-boots/lock ups.

> I had only ad lock for almosta minute when I was testing the sat channels, it was still showing the tv channel and playing the audio properly. If this is your case try using the side view app to show the guide and change channel from there, it unlocked my tv.

There is some very SERIOUS and FUNDAMENTAL lack of competence with the so-called 'Engineers' who are tinkering with the 'advanced facilities' of these sets when they have not yet produced a platform that reliably does the very basic things a TV set of this calibre is supposed to be able to do!

 > Unfornunately I agree

@manuelsal Unfortunately I can't modify the post as I killed that account after I offloaded my TV, Phone and PS4 due to the lack of technical capability demonstrated by Sony and their utter disregard for their customers.

I only visit this thread nowadays to make notes and take examples for use when showing my clients how not to develop software and handle customer relations. As a textbook example of how to alienate loyal customers it's unparalleled.

What does surprise me constantly is the amount of leeway being shown by the forum users here. I'm amazed anyone has any hope left. Bear in mind that development for these TVs must have started at least 6 months before they were released in May 2015 (I'm being generous with that timescale) and the new launch date for HDD and PIP / PAP of March 2016 means a development lead time of 16 months give or take.

16 months to write a piece of software that records to HDDs? I'd love to see the company representative that claims the development team behind that timescale is competent...

Anyway, best of luck to those of you still perservering. I doubt Sony will ever fix these TVs now as the resources allocated to the code most likely have moved onto the 2016 codebase and the 2015 codebase will be a case of do enough to minimise the damage.

L8rs all.

Nick.

@NickCo1979Thanks, I fully agree.
I work in IT as well and also my idea is that they don't and won't bother about fixing the 2015 serie, that's why I'm considering to return it if I can.
