2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

Unfortunately - and this is common these days - 'customer service' is more about frustrating the 'victim' until they just get fed up and go away; these big corporations know that consumer protection law is of little real practical use to the average person on the street...  With many Trading Standards departments (certainly mine here in West Lothian) just not properly resourced ( or really interested enough) to do their jobs...

Watchdog?  Some 'suit' is propped up to spout the party line to 'Granny Greyhips'... A few 'special bairns' from the Brilliant Boys' Club look outraged, they huff and they puff and the majority of people are still 'handled' on the mushroom principle - i.e. kept on the dark and fed on $**t!

- Look at the recent scandals involving white goods that have caused fatal fires... And similarly the carry-on with Vauxhall Zafiras burning themselves to the ground...  And these are more serious issues that are costing lives! - People's lives are actually endangered and they're screaming blue murder; but all the manufacturers involved care about is  securing their own position 'till it blows over...  NO chance of them taking responsibility for their killing machines, recalling and replacing the whole damned lot as they should - What's a kid's life Vs their balance sheet?

I'm afraid that IS the reality of 'corporate mentality'...

...In truth, how bothered do you think Sony are about a few duff tellies?   They'll bring out next year's range; continue to palm us off here for a while.  - Customer satisfaction or loyalty or even doing the right thing just don't figure in any of this.

Keep the issues Concise?  Yes; because that - for most consumers - will help keep the real problems here well buried! - Just as the earlier issues of posts allegedly being censored did!

The latest update is just another crock of sheer incompetence...  Fiddling round the edges (and failing by the sounds of it) whilst doing nothing to address the core problems!

There is no doubting what technical problems exist! And if Sony's engineers were remotely competent they'd have done something about them by now...  It's hardly the case that THEY are just coming to the forum! - And even if that was true; it's actually their job to trawl through 300-odd  pages and sort out the wheat from the chaff!

The shameful truth here is that Sony have taken us all for mugs! They've released a product - not for the first time - which simply isn't fit for purpose expecting consumers to do their field testing for them and PAY for the 'pleasure'!  The set I have here is ten days old! It's been on the market for months now.  - Sony have had more than enough time to iron out any 'teething troubles' and yet they have not got even the very BASIC functions working properly... Not even the BASICS!

So really the issue here is gross incompetence and contempt for the customer on the part of Sony....

I'd be interested to see how they make it right - but wouldn't hold my breath...

The only way this set will get fixed is if someone with REAL programming expertise hacks into it and re-designs the UI.  - Even then; my instict is that the hardware just isn't up to the job of running all the applications that Sony are inflicting on us here.  And really it's THEIR problem...

I've said it before; to restore any 'honour' the brand might have had they need to take responsibility... Provide a basic alternative firmaware  that just gets the core of the set working! - And start supplying those that need the advanced functions with set-top boxes that do that job properly!

Of cause sony could junk the 2015 code and just put the 2016 one on our older sets. After all a ps4 at release gets the same software as one made today. Sent from my Samsung device

... they don't and won't bother about fixing the 2015 serie, that's why I'm considering to return it if I can.

Exactly why I was so keen to get mine returned to PCW. If it had been earlier in the year I might have hung onto it hoping for an update to fix all the issues, but with 2016 nearly here I didn't want to get stuck with a TV Sony wasn't concentrating on anymore (or just can't fix).

If Sony released firmware now that sorted all the issues, even if I couldn't have youview and HDD recording, I'd buy the TV again. In the meantime I've got a cheap and cheerful Hitachi 43" TV to give me time to see what Sony do to sort out this mess and make sure whatever they come up with works 100% before I consider buying it. (Sony appear to be the only manufacturer selling a 43" that does Freeview HD, satellite HD and 4K in my price range or I'd be buying someone elses TV and steering clear of Sony.)

Manuel…

>> (If you can explain the error) Worked for me partially, after importing the Digital channel list was updated but not the sat one

I simply got an 'import failed' message…

>> I never tried the favourites I will do it this weekend and let you know

I tried this as a 'workaround' for the useless tuning menu… You CAN set up satellite channels on 'favourites 2' – But if you then use the 'guide' – about 50% of the time – the channel you're actually watching will be deleted from that favourites list.

>> Same frustrating behaviour in my side

Yup! – And the UI is complete rubbish anyway; life's too short for this!

> STILL no Diseqc control; even though it's there on the menu.

>> I don't know how this works and what is supposed to do, I'm new with sat TV, if you like send me a private msg so I can try to test in my TV

It's a system for switching between multiple satellite dishes… I have one pointed at Astra for the usual UK channels and a second dish pointed at Eutelsat 5W for some French channels… The menu is there, but the set just doesn't operate the switch! – The system works perfectly with my old receiver!

>> Not using HDML, the optical connection to my sound bar never had problems, and in the past I used my laptop to play some video content and I didn't notice any issue, send me a private msg with some detail so I can try to reproduce the issue

Connection to external audio equipment is generally dodgy… I now suspect the set of having actually damaged the HDMI board in an old Onkyo amplifier! - But even with more recent kit it's hit-and-miss what will or won't work with ARC. I've 'borrowed' a couple of new-ish soundbars, some it works with over HDMI some it doesn't...

Optical was my only option; as it will be for many people.

The 'latency' issue I refer to varies with the input – for instance a disc featuring DTS audio switched through the set with the audio being sent to an external amplifier will have the sound delayed by as much as (an estimated) 6-8 frames… There is no problem if you're just outputting PCM from the set; although that's about as much use as a chocolate teapot if you've paid thousands of pounds for a proper home cinema system! – You lose the surround effects!

The only 'workaround' is to feed the audio direct to the amp from the device! - Which is really not the level of convenience I paid for!

>> I tried yesterday withe the two astra UHD channels, they worked for me and the quality was actually impressive

Yes – the Astra test transmission ( actually it looks as though there might only be only one of them - the second is a 'phantom'and switching between them crashes my set!) is fine… However; I have had the set connected to my Fransat dish which is also carrying a UHD test…

The set cannot decode it!

Black screen with sound only! Mainly, as I say, because Sony's UI does not have the facility to set the proper parameters – the transmission itself is to a recognised current standard!

So – given Sony's attitude and demonstrable incompetence – what's the hope that these sets will receive future UHD transmissions?

>> I had only ad lock for almosta minute when I was testing the sat channels, it was still showing the tv channel and playing the audio properly. If this is your case try using the side view app to show the guide and change channel from there, it unlocked my tv.

I've no desire to use any 'app' - actually; I don't even want to see all that rubbish (IMHO) on my home screen... That wouldn't - for me - be an acceptable workaround. But in any case don't see how I could anyway if the set is totally locked up and just won't respond at all! – Pulling the plug seems to be the only 'cure'!

Don't get me wrong, those people that want/need the 'advanced' online features of the set are perfectly correct to be outraged… But I just want to use this set as a fairly basic TV… And it just does not even achieve that level of functionality! – Not even the basics!

It's spectacular incompetence!

I sent Sony an email last week, i have got reply saying look for update and i got update and below is my second email to Sony today :

Hello,

I updated last night to new firmware, it was rebooting when playing content from external HDD more often and freezing. Also it looses wifi password. If i turn off TV by pressing remote power button 5 seconds, TV turns off and it will on again can't shutdown.. very bad..

What should I do? this is useless for me. This is my second unit as Amazon already replaced one.

I believe Sony is a top brand and I don't understand why I need to suffer with pain when i pay premium money to this TV?

Please also check this thread the issues others mentioning

I have the KD55X8509C and I shall be playing possum and waiting for new models as only reason its not returned to date is I cant be ****** driving 40 miles to nearest store to dump it. Can't see anything being fixed with this in the near future especially with them now delaying HDD a further 3 Months in the space of a couple of weeks but no model out there for me has the same qualityof Picture and low-lag for gaming at the price I'm willing to spend at the moment.

I complained to KnowHow team a few weeks back and received written confirmation from them that they would accept the return of my TV, Will be funny to see someone in store trying to refuse acceptance of return on this based that no issues have been resolved and will likely be more by time I finally bite the bullet and return this.

Don't know where you got that idea!  - Even at ( as they are now) virtually half-price they're expensive sets...  You can buy a cheapo Chinese junk set from Tescos that at least does what it says on the tin!

Many of the problems with them are at  a very basic level... As in if a kid at college turned in work of this standard they'd be kicked off their course!

Simply paying incompetent people more money won't improve anything!
