2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

I did my last update without leaving the TV on after the install and I am having some problems.

Does anyone know if it is possible to reinstall the same version of firmware?

After 9 months since purchase, a chat with the Citizen's Advice Beuro and a letter to the CEO - I've finally gotten a full refund £2699.02 - don't give up hope - also rmemeber if you take them to small claims court that Sony have to send a representative to the court you take your case to - if they resuse you win by default

I've ordered a 65" Samsung UE65JS9000 from John Lewis - I trust them to be helpful if it develeops any issues

Good luck folks

My TV decided to start itself today just 1 min ago without me even touching the remote.

I have the eco settings on and I wonder how many times it must have done that in the night.

I have done a factory restore to try and stop the tv switching itself on. I thought this would return it to the day it was built but no it still has the latest faulty 3179 firmware on it.

If i am using a Freeview Channel (YouView) say channel 107 (BBC News HD), then i turn my PS4 on, it auto switches to the correct HDMI source.  Which is how it should be.

Upon switching OFF the PS4, it auto switched back to Freeview - but not to channel 107, but to channel 811 - which is a null channel.

Can any one confirm this issue or similar?

I though there may have been some improvements.. but no !

I updated to PKG3.179.0100EUA, no factory reset as yet (to be fair)

I checked this morning (for your issue) but I don't have PS4 but do have Sky+ HD with full CEC control, which switches ON the TV & selects the correct HDMI port.

It went this way (sadly) Switched ON TV using just the TVs remote Sky box off. The TV came on to last used i/p as it normally does.. showed the HDMI screen with no signal message (as it should). Pressed the TV button to select YouView, the set then rebooted and came back to HDMI screen. Selected TV OK and then ch 107, waited a bit then powered up Sky box. TV correctly selected HDMI and worked OK. Switched off Sky box and it went to the 'No signal' HDMI screen which it normally does. Pressed TV and it went baclk to YouView Ch107 as I would have expected. So I could not reproduce your issue (under slightly different conditions).

So my findings at the moment are:

Good..

1) remote seems snappier in operation normally.

2) the issue i reported with channel Five films showing date rather than title in the YouView DISCOVER area has been fixed.

Bad..

3) Still have the remote control issue of the remote sometime sending a double command when scrolling up channels. i.e. jumps two channels rather than on on a single key press.

4) Remote stops responding to presses now and again, have to wait 30 second to resume or kick into life using SideView app.

5) Random reboot when selecting YouView (as above)

6) I have had one event of blank screen with sound during switch off, had to switch on and restart via Settings - help to resolve.

So to confirm your other post, as the TV has been quite stable since the Dec 10th update, the Blank Scree with sound and reboot issue has come back since this update, having once been resolved.

I was hoping for more as we had to wait for this update. I will have time this afternoon to record all my settings and apps, before I do a factory reset, leave on and wait for at least 30 minutes before reinstalling apps or changing settings. Good job there is no one else in the house who actually wants to watch TV.

I will report my findings again after the factory reset. I am however not going to waste too much time until the March update with more bug fixes and HDD & PAP, but I just want to record the issues I currently have to ensure they are captured by Sony for the next update. What is the best way to get this to Sony appart from ringing the support centre, who are useless & powerless to get things resolved?

Thanks for your efforts & time

It is normal for a factory reset to keep the latest Firmware, but remove all other changes and reset all temp files. However, from my own experience, I find that a Factory Reset after an update does seem to 'settle' odd issues after an update. I hope this sorts your random turn ons.

If it doesn't try Settings, Network, Remote Start (set this to off). There is also auto on settings in the External Inputs, BRAVIA Sync settings, which you might need to check.

Why is it that in some instances (on other websites) you have people saying that they have had no issues whatsoever with their TV since purchase and then on the other hand so many problems being reported here? Are there particular models that are affected more than others? Or do Sony's later builds incorporate more hefty processors?

I bought my TV in September of last year, and despite having problems with it I have had nothing on the scale of what some people have had here. Since the latest update the TV has become miles better, the only issue is sometimes it stops responding to the TV remote so I just have to wait about 10 - 20 seconds and then I can carry on.

I tried to find out what hardware is inside the TV, the only thing I could find was in the Kodi app, and you can look at system info. All it says for mine is that it's an ARMv7 processor, which is in a lot of android devices, and that it's got 1.5GB RAM. That seems pretty low to me, considering my phone has 2GB and is running the same version of Android. Despite only having 1.5GB it seems to be able to cope with the OS pretty well. Whilst Kodi is open it's using something like 1.1 - 1.3GB, it also tells me the CPU usage and with no video playing it's fluctuating widly between something like 5% and 40%.

That's good to know. I decided to take the  plunge on a 43w807 from John Lewis (price match at £330) which is being delivered on Friday. I'll check mine when it's set up and see if there's any difference etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no issues...
