Sony Dolby Atmos support firmware update

Hi,

I have Sony KD-55XF9005 and still waiting for Dolby Atmos support firmware update.

Is anyone here in the community knows when will it be available?

Thanks in Advance!

P.S.

I have registered my TV online and in the Download section don't see any firmware update for Dolby Atmos.

I also see 2019 TV models advertisement in Sony website also says firmware will be released later.

Ok. Sounds good.

Let's say Netflix app(with premium subscription) on Sony AF9 TV can stream
Dolby atmos content to Sony ht-st5000 soundbar, am i right?

It's a Passthrough, for sure it will pass the signal from an external device, from the App I imagine it is still possible.

Ok. I am still don't get the answer for my case.

Sony KD-55XF9005 is 2018 model and have Netflix app installed. I have
premium subscription and don't get the atmos audio.
If I check Netflix help center they say all Sony 2018 models and newer
supports Atmos.

Could you help me guiding in some way?

Passthrough doesn't mean the internal app will support Dolby Atmos flow (see https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1533275502 )

Later on at CES 2019 (only for Master Series still) Sony announced internal app support (even if internal speaker won't be able obviously to support Dolby Atmos being only 3.2 maximum) https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2019/01/17/and-the-winner-of-ces-is-dolby/#640066e71589

Netglix wrote to refer to Sony for the model list, it doesn't mean nothing 2018 model... there are 2018 models that doesn't have the netlix app at all (like the R series)

This was helpful information.

What i understand after reading those blogs is, you need Netflix app
inbuilt in TV to support Atmos and TV should have eARC. Is it right?

Is there any plan Sony would update Netflix app for KD-55XF9005 model to
support Atmos?

The update of the Apps depends on who develops in this case Netflix not Sony, and in any case the XF series does not have and will not have eARC. That's all.

Yeah true but, why does the specification of XG85 (2019 model) says Dolby
Atmos will be made available in the future update. What does this mean?

Thanks & Regards

Hi Rooob,

I am talking about XF9005 which is 2018 model and has Netflix app pre installed, So, I expect this model should be able to stream atmos. Isn't it? Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Vasuki,

i do not understand your logic... even if I cannot understand dutch why on earth if it is written that Dolby Atmos will be available via a firmware update on XG85 2019 you expect that it applies to your 2018 XF90 model?

Anyway, you should be aware that, evene if such an update could be released technically on your tv, you won't be able to do nothing with it because:

  • internal speakers of your tv are stereo only, so forgetting even  normal surrounding how do you expect to simulate ceiling speaker...
  • your tv do not have eARC (HDMI 2.1 specification) so it won't be able to passthrough Dolby atmos (not even Dolby digital plus with more than 5.1 channels) to an Home theater assuming you have one that support Dolby Atmos

The only option it remain for you (and to me by the way with my KD55A1 that share the same platform) is to have an external box that support Dolby Atmos (i.e. an UHD 4k Player) connected directly to an HT that support Dolby Atmos too (Dolby Atmos will go to an HT - if it support it -  using HDMI connection that has a much wider band than the ARC channel from a tv).

I hope I explained clearly the concept
