Why is Sony customer service so AWFUL?

There can be a problem, though I'm not sure what would come of it.  If  you are going to cancel the payment, then make sure you atleast call SONY  and cancel the transaction with them as well to secure yourself on both  ends.  Don't leave any stone unturned if you can help it.

Call sony and cancel...dont forget to leave a hefty complaint, write them if you have to, several times.

Call your bank, keep your money.

Buying a sony laptop from a place like BestBuy or another electronics store is probably your fastest and safest bet. With best buy you can deal with their Geek Squad directly if you ever have any issues after you buy your computer and let Best Buy deal with Sony.
