Arrrgghhhh - My DVD/CD Drive annoying me (VGN-A417M)

PLease help, not really wanting to send it back to sony as i have to use this laptop a lot.

The dvd/cd drive is causing me headaches!!!

the drive will play and write dvd's, but very rarely reads CD's !!!

it makes a noise, like a motor moving, but then it says it can't be read, and hangs my machine ...

I have upgraded to the latest firmware for it...

Is there anything i am missing before i have to send it back ???

It is both.. seems really weird, the laptop is only 2 months old !!!

There could be the usual problems of compatible discs with the machine, I found the cheaper dvds/cd roms are useless.

If its not that, I'll step out of the way and let the 'knowledge guys' give a more technical solution.

Have you used a lens cleaner?

Is the optical drive a DW-D56A by any chance?
