Max,
First thing to consider is that your model comes with 512 Mb memory as standard, but this does not necessarily mean that you have one 512 module, it could be two 256 Mb chips, in which case you need two new 512 Mb modules to upgrade to 1024 Mb.
Unless you know your present configuration, I suggest that you go to Crucial and use the Memory Advisor Tool to check.
There is a guide to installing and checking new memory in your on-line User Guide.
Installing additional Sony memory will not affect your warranty but it will put a big dent in your pocket ¿ check out the price of memory at Crucial when you are there.
in the crucial there is not a model that i have VGN-S4M/S, so i can not use tool Memory Advisor Tool.
ABout 256x2 or 512, Sony told me that it must be a slot free, but u right at the web side it s write that are 2x256

Down load and run Everest Home Edition.
Expand Motherboard and have a look at Chipset. This will show you the modules in each slot.
