message app shows new msg which doesn't exist

Since after receiving and removing an mms message my messages app is constantly showing that a message exists.

Persists after deleting all existing conversations and on clearing app cache and data through app settings.

Go to settings, apps. Then disable the app and restart the phone and enable the app again once the phone restarts.

Thanks to advise what happened for me, performed the above described suggestion and had the following happen:

Before taking these actions I had zero items in the messaging app, and I don't use hangouts all that much so was at the time unaware what messages if any resided there (at least I know there was nothing unread otherwise I would have seen a notification on the device, anyway :

Disable messaging
Restart device
Enable messaging
Hangouts opened instead of sms messaging
In hangouts found 1 unread mms message the same one I'd removed a while ago from messages app.
Deleted desired messages from hangouts
Opened messages, no new messages icon
Hangouts became default sms app, using a prompt I switcher messages as default sms app.

All is well
