graphic card on SONY VGN-AR5IE suddenly not working as soon as you switch on laptop

now a new problem laptop was working fine up to yesterday , started  ok to begin with then when you went on any site the graphics started jumbling up, lots of squiggles and odd pattens so couldnt shut down properly restarted it and it said do you want to start in safe mode or normal  . did both  then it worked ok for 2 minutes enough to see icon saying n vidia has found a problem do you want to go back to previous settings  so did that ....still cuts out. all this started to  happen when i downloaded a  watchbox  movie (you pay for for 24hrs) it said it needed to update the graphic card drivers. now its got worse it jumbles up as soon as laptop starts and you can just make out it needs to repair itself but  you cant see anything properly. went to repair shop he said it would cost 109.00 told me they might have to do something which is fiddly to do with the cpu? or may be dust? or could be when the change of power surge could alter something or other but its definatly not sounding like a virus has caused it ....HELP what should i do....

Hi there,

It is definatly the GPU chip. Very common fault on the VGN-AR's. Its the solder that they use on these GPU chips, the quality isn't nowehere near as good as on other models. It will require the GPU chip reballing. It isn't dust thats causing the problem.
