Hi, the VAIO Gate shell extension is broken and as a quick fix I'd like to disable it. How can I do that without regedit hacks and without manually deleting the DLL (followed by a registry cleanup)? I like the VAIO Gate, just uninstalling it to get rid of its shell extensions won't be an ideal solution for this issue.

If you want to stop VAIO Gate from starting every time Windows starts simply click the toolbox next to the X on the far right side of the VAIO Gate toolbar. This will open the below VAIO Gate settings screen.
Slide the option “Load At Startup” to No if you do not want VAIO Gate to load when Windows starts up.
I have not tried them so this is not a recommendation but have a look at ShellExView

And Microsoft Autoruns

Thanks, I found the NIRsoft trick on my hard disk before your answer here. 🙂 Just disabling the shell extension fixed the trash/bin issue after one last explorer crash. The VAIO Gate desktop shell extension is a different beast and not involved.
